The Disasters of The Public Transportation System

Regular bus users in Kamloops might be accustomed to its mishaps. From the amount of garbage, broken glass, and cigarette butts, to the lateness/cancellations, and the unsafe feelings you get while on the buses. For this Keeping It Weird Kamloops story, I had the pleasure of interviewing a highschool student, Abaigail Nesbitt, and got her take and experiences of the public transportation system. Listen to what she has to say below in our podcast!

During the interview with Abai, she talked about her experiences with public transportation in Kamloops and how scary it can be. We also talked about ways she would like to see the bus system change and how she would change it herself. Abai was very adamant about how she feels the bus system is unfair. When I had asked her to explain why she feels it is unfair she told me that at the start of January, her mom had forgotten to get a bus pass for her, so she went to the bus stop with no pass, knowing that the drivers are usually lenient on the first of the month. However, the driver wouldn’t let her on without paying. So she had to pay $2 to get on. Later that week, she went out with some friends and saw that the bus drivers would let on the homeless people for free. She didn’t feel it was fair to make a highschool student pay to use the bus, but let any homeless person on for free. To finish off the interview, Abai had touched on how she feels about the bus drivers, talking about how it feels unwelcoming to be on a bus.

Episode 3: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Featuring Brett Neighbour.

Disclaimer: Sensitive content, mentions of narcotics and slight mention of weaponry.

On this weeks episode of Finding The Weird in Kamloops, I interview my former co-worker, Brett Neighbour, about the strangest discoveries at our old job, 1-800-GOT-JUNK.

The job of collecting trash from people’s homes landed us in some strange scenarios, including finding unexplainable items. From narcotics to personal items… unexpected bedroom finds, 1-800-GOT-JUNK provides a behind-the-scenes look at what would appear on an episode of Hoarders.

As we mentioned before, what we discuss is sensitive material that might not be for the faint of heart, because not only for the mentions of narcotics, but also how mental health can affect one’s living situation. Inside a home, is a window to the life of the one who is living there, because everyone has something that will make it unique. Kamloops is home to some of the strangest people to walk with this planet, and at 1-800-GOT-JUNK, you are tasked with going into those people’s homes. Listen to Brett’s story and let us know if you have anything weirder than Brett’s mannequin in your closet. At the end of the story, I present our next guest for next week’s episode, so stay tuned to find out!

Until then, keep it weird, Kamloops!

Kamloops And The Supernatural: A Match Made In Hell

Who knows what lurks in the dark?

Ghosts. Poltergeists. The Supernatural. These ideas of the spiritual afterlife are not uncommon in Kamloops. In fact, many spooky stories involving hauntings often circulate around town. Recently, Keeping It Weird Kamloops had the pleasure of interviewing local resident Beckett Reid on his experience with ghosts. Listen to our podcast episode to hear his full story.

The Lorax: Protest or Hoax?

In a blink of an eye, the infamous Lorax attraction has disappeared off the TRU campus. With his undiscovered remains, only one question lingers…

What happened to the Lorax?

Before the disappearance

Back in early September 2024, the trees in front of the Old Main building at TRU were cut down. Shortly after, a lonesome Lorax figure stood on top of one of the stumps. For those who don’t know, the Lorax is a book and movie written by Dr. Seuss in which a strange creature fights to protect the trees. Since its placement, the Lorax has become a staple at TRU. As time went on, numerous artifacts began to show up in support of the Lorax. Some of the items include poems, artwork and a mini tree from the movie.

In an ironic series of events, the environment activist icon eventually degraded into a site of garbage and waste. Unrelated objects overwhelmed the surrounding area until its appearance mirrored that of a trash can.

The case of the missing Lorax

At the beginning of 2025, tragedy struck. The beloved Lorax had gone missing. It even looks like someone had burned where the Lorax once stood. This then changes the question of why the Lorax to where is the Lorax? What looked to be the act of protest was suddenly shut down with the culprit still at large. Was this an act of retaliation or just mother nature taking its course and with it, the Lorax?

With that in mind, what is your take? What do you think happened and what do you think the original intent was? Feel free to discuss in the comments and be sure to let us know of any other strange events in the city. Until then, keep it weird Kamloops!
